Manila, Philippines – February 11, 2021 — Even with the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, Google Philippines and the Teach Peace Build Peace Movement (TPBPM) were able to bring their “Cyberpeace” campaign to more than 416,000 internet users across the country through social media, YouTube, and online events.
The Cyberpeace campaign was first introduced on Safer Internet Day 2019 to teach young people about digital responsibility. It started with the goal of reaching 10,000 high school students in their schools. When the pandemic stopped face-to-face activities, the program quickly shifted online, using webinars, Google Meet, and YouTube to reach more people.
“At Google, digital responsibility is a key priority, especially now as we, together with our children, spend more and more time online,” said Yves Gonzalez, Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy at Google Philippines.
The campaign focused on three areas: creating helpful products, supporting policies that respond to online challenges, and building partnerships. It tackled issues like misinformation, scams, cyberbullying, and cancel culture, while working with youth leaders, influencers, and creators to spread positive messages online.
To make the campaign more engaging, volunteers and partners created spoken word poetry and animated videos about kindness, online safety, strong passwords, critical thinking, and courage online. These were shared on YouTube, which reaches over 40 million Filipinos.
The content was developed with the help of young volunteers, including TiTik Poetry, multimedia artist Christwin Felix, and storyteller Grace Bufi. Well-known voices like Dingdong Dantes and YouTube creator Janina Vela also took part to bring the stories to life.
“At Google, we believe in enabling partners, communities, and volunteers so we can all build a safer internet,” said Bernadette Nacario, Country Director of Google Philippines. “Cyberpeace shows that everyone—no matter their age or background—can use their talents to promote digital responsibility.”
Through creativity, teamwork, and technology, the Cyberpeace campaign proves that everyone has a role in building a kinder and safer online world.
